Organizations and citizens demand that UNAM remove the exhibition “The Coming of the Lord”

More than 47 thousand signatures were delivered to the Rectorate of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) to demand the cancellation of the exhibition The Coming of the Lord , by the artist Fabián Cháirez . Organizations and citizens argue that the exhibition, presented at the Academy of San Carlos in the center of Mexico City , violates religious freedom and discriminates against the Catholic community.
Protesters say the exhibition features mocking and offensive images of religious figures such as priests, nuns, angels and cardinals. They also point out that the artist himself stated that his work is intended to compare “ religious ecstasy and sexual ecstasy ”, which they consider a direct attack on their beliefs.

Selene Arroyo , campaign leader for Actívate, said the exhibition violates the right to religious freedom, enshrined in Article 24 of the Mexican Constitution . “We cannot allow a public institution to use our money to promote mockery of our beliefs. Respect for the faith of millions of Mexicans is not negotiable,” she said.
UNAM temporarily closes “The Coming of the Lord”On February 14, UNAM temporarily closed the exhibition for security reasons. However, Hugo Rico , representative of Solidart , questioned the measure and assured that all demonstrations are peaceful.
The protesters consider that the silence of the UNAM is equivalent to tacit consent to the attack on the Catholic faith. Elisa Bonilla , from CitizenGO , criticized the use of public resources for what she called an offensive exhibition. Leonardo Alvarado , from Christian Lawyers , warned about the risks of “confusing freedom of expression with the license to offend and discriminate.”

The platforms Actívate, CitizenGO and the Association of Christian Lawyers, together with organizations such as Hazte Sentir and Solidart, reiterated their demand that UNAM take immediate action. These organizations often collaborate on campaigns and actions to promote shared values and objectives, especially on issues related to religion, family and public morality. While some defend the artist's right to free expression, others argue that the university must ensure that no community is ridiculed in public spaces.
